Designing an odds feed ingestion pipeline

An engineering view of ingesting odds and market data: adapters, mapping, staleness guards, failover and how to test with recorded feeds.

A sportsbook is only as reliable as the pipeline that feeds it. This article outlines the pieces of a robust odds ingestion design. It is a pattern guide, not a prescription: your provider protocol and volumes will shape the details.

Start with an internal model

Define your own events, markets and outcomes. Every provider adapter translates into this model, and nothing downstream knows provider formats. This keeps provider changes local.

Adapters

Each adapter owns connection handling (reconnect, back-off), parsing, validation and emission of internal events. It should reject malformed messages loudly and count them.

Mapping

Providers identify teams, competitions and markets differently. Maintain a mapping table with a review queue for unmatched entities. Unmapped data should be held back, not guessed.

Ordering and idempotency

Updates may arrive late or twice. Use sequence numbers or timestamps from the provider and make writes idempotent so replays are safe.

Staleness guards

If a feed goes quiet, the system should suspend affected markets automatically after a threshold you choose. Showing old prices is worse than showing none.

Multiple providers

Decide precedence rules in advance: primary with fallback, best-price selection or per-sport assignment. More providers increase resilience and complexity together.

Settlement

Results feeds can be corrected. Keep settlement logic able to reverse and re-apply, with an audit trail.

Testing

Record real feeds and replay them in tests, including bad data, bursts and gaps. Load test with replays at multiples of expected event-day rates.

Observability

Track feed freshness, message rates, mapping failures and end-to-end latency from provider to client. Alert on trends, not only outages.
